Ghana beat Nigeria 4-3 in thrilling Commonwealth Games warm-up clash in Accra – KA Sports Boxing

Ghana’s young fighters delivered a spirited performance to edge Nigeria 4-3 in an entertaining amateur boxing tournament staged as part of preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The closely contested event showcased the growing rivalry between the two West African boxing nations, with every bout fought at a high tempo and with determination. From the opening bell to the final contest, both teams displayed skill, courage and discipline, giving fans a glimpse of what could be expected when the Commonwealth Games begin in Glasgow this year.

For Ghana’s Black Bombers, the victory was more than just a scoreline. It was an important test of readiness and an opportunity to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the squad ahead of the Games.

Speaking after the tournament, the head coach of the Black Bombers coach Dr. Ofori Asare said the tournament had exposed critical areas the fighters must improve on before the Commonwealth Games.

“… tournament has exposed the fighters in areas we need to work on,” he said. “It has given us the chance to measure ourselves against quality opponents and identify where we must improve before Glasgow.”

Dr. Asare reflected on Ghana’s performance at the last Commonwealth Games, where the team secured two silver medals and one bronze. However, he believes the current squad has the potential to go even further.

“…at the last Commonwealth Games we won two silver medals and a bronze, but this time we must change the colours of our medals, we must make sure we win atleast one gold…” he stated confidently.

The coach also praised the Ghana Boxing Federation for its commitment to the development of the team and for ensuring the fighters are exposed to competitive international level contests ahead of the Games.

While Ghana celebrated victory on home soil, Nigeria also earned admiration for their resilience and technical quality, underlining the healthy competition between the two countries as they continue their preparations for Glasgow 2026.
For the Black Bombers, the journey is far from over. But after a hard-fought triumph in Accra, hopes are growing that Ghana’s next generation of boxers could return from Glasgow with the nation’s long-awaited gold medal.
